Our first night on the road

We were invited by my friends Luke & Heather Hunt to stay at their place on our first night. Luke was a graduate student at Hopkins Marine Station a number of years ago. I had a great time helping Luke with his Ph.D. research when he was seeking old photos of the rocks off of Hopkins to document the change in height of the algae on the rocks over time.

Luke & Heather live in Nevada City, CA with their three boys. Luke works for American Rivers and Heather is a chiropractor in practice with her dad. Betty and I arrived in time for a delicious dinner which we ate outside trying to ignore all the bees. After dinner we spent time catching up with what everyone has been up to before heading to bed. Betty took the guest room in the house, and I headed down the hill past the chicken coop to the Airstream where I spent the night. This was a first for me. It was very comfortable, and I slept well. It also was just a cool place to spend my first night on this new adventure.

In the morning Luke and Heather got the kids ready for the day. Jake was heading off to 1st grade, Giles was heading off to kindergarten, and Ian would be staying at home with his nanny who arrived before we left. Heather was taking their Prius in for an oil change, but otherwise biking to work is the normal mode of transportation for the Hunts. Here you see Luke & Heather with the power assisted bike that can hold all three boys on the back.

After leaving the Hunt's place we headed into Nevada City for short walk around the historic downtown area. The National Hotel seen in the photo below was built in 1852.

The hotel's restaurant is on street level, and its lobby is on the second floor. Here is a photo of Betty sitting in the lobby.

Luke had a full day of meetings, so he wasn't able to show us around his office. Betty and I did locate his office on our stroll through downtown.

Our next stop is Truckee, and from there we head to Lake Tahoe.
